A Yellow Pine Farm Table for a Military Mom's Holiday Homecoming
In 2012, a customer visited us with her daughter. After browsing our display room, she ordered a custom American-made yellow pine farmhouse table crafted from reclaimed wood. She asked if we could build and deliver it before the holiday season that year.
I knew the deadline would be challenging, but we were motivated to meet it.
The customer was a military nurse and working mother who had witnessed significant wartime suffering. She wanted to enjoy special time at home with her children before returning to the Middle Eastern combat zone.
Her job involved evacuating wounded soldiers directly from battlefields by helicopter. She shared the harsh realities of what she'd witnessed firsthand. She was scheduled to redeploy to Afghanistan just two days after Christmas.
She wanted to gather her entire family around a new custom yellow pine table for Thanksgiving—and we wanted to make that happen for her.
Crafting a Yellow Pine Farm Table from Old Barn Wood
Yellow pine is traditionally a southern wood. During the 1700s and 1800s, it was logged and transported north on river barges, likely from the Carolinas.
Yellow pine is the hardest pine we use for farm tables. Our reclaimed yellow pine barn wood creates tabletops ranging from 1¼" to 1½" thick—an important feature for many customers.
We've occasionally made yellow pine farmhouse tables with 2-inch-thick tops. These create exceptionally thick, heavy tables. While they're not standard, we can build them when requested.
Our yellow pine wood features a distinctive grainy texture. Its hues are noticeably more yellow than modern species, which appear lighter in comparison.
We often combine darker and lighter pieces of yellow pine. Various elements contributed to the darker pieces' coloring. Mixing them with lighter boards creates beautiful contrast in the finished product.
A Yellow Pine Farmhouse Table for the Holidays
Our customer also commissioned a matching bench and corner cabinet. We eagerly anticipated delivering these pieces to her kitchen.
After placing her order, she seemed amazed to have found us at Furniture From the Barn. The old-world aesthetic of our displayed yellow pine tables was exactly what she wanted.
She'd dreamed of owning such a table for years. We were honored to make it happen.
Our customers love receiving handcrafted farm tables throughout the year. For this military mom, however, receiving her yellow pine table just before the 2012 holidays was perfect timing. It allowed her to share her first meal on the antique wood table with her family—the best possible way to celebrate.
